Devotions to the Souls in Purgatory

Pray for the suffering souls in Purgatory!
Many of your loved ones may be there. Don’t forget them!

The Creed that we say every Sunday says we believe in the Communion of Saints. That means all faithful baptized Catholics, living and dead, form one Body of Christ. We are united with the saints in Heaven and the suffering souls in Purgatory.

Praying for the living and the dead is one of the seven Spiritual Works of Mercy. Our prayers help to release souls from Purgatory, and they will gratefully pray for us in return. As the old song says, “Pray for the dead and the dead will pray for you.”

Confraternity Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity
of Thy dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Prayer of Saint Gertrude the Great
To release 1,000 souls from Purgatory:
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
(Approval and Recommendation: M. Cardinal Pahiarca at Lisbon, Portugal, March 4, 1936)
